Thunderstorms over Kayenta 8x10, 2013, oil on linen.
This was an outdoor painting, I just came across that scene whilst I was painting with my Dad near Kayenta on the Navajo reservation. Sometimes the tyres are used as little retaining walls. I liked this scene and thought it would be fun to do a larger piece one day, I even stretched the canvas ready I just didn’t have the time to do it yet. No shadows, o with the sun is directly above and the sun washed out the color, so it’s just monochromatic sand, dirt and sage brush except those distance mesas.
Part of the Mid-Career Retrospective at the Booth Museum, the painting will remain with the exhibition collection through September 2026 and will be available for collection or shipping following the close of the exhibition.
